What To Do When Anxiety Grows And With It The Commitments?

What to do when the anxiety grows and with it the commitments?

Anxiety paralyzes me. I have many commitments to take on right now, but I can’t, I feel I can’t go on. The more the to-do list grows, the harder it is for me to start doing them. Knowing that everything I have to do accumulates causes me even more concern.

This is a very common fact, sometimes anxiety presents itself in a paradoxical way, that is, having a high workload can overwhelm us to the point that we do not know where to start. It is a dog that bites its tail, the more commitments correspond to greater anxiety … and greater anxiety corresponds to greater difficulty in getting to work.

A good idea to take the first step is to put an end to this vicious circle that wraps us in a dead end spiral of stress and worry. Relax, breathe deeply and get organized. First of all, what is the most important task to complete? Once you’ve made a list of priorities to address your schedule, get to work.

Types of anxiety and strategies for dealing with them

On some occasions, you may not be able to dodge stressful situations and there will be no other remedy left but to deal with them. For this reason, we suggest that you plan your action plan intelligently. Think that before dealing with a serious anxiety problem, it is important to identify the way in which it presents itself, by contacting a professional.

Symptoms of anxiety can occur at different rates and in different ways, and can be triggered by a variety of factors. For example, if symptoms come in the form of sudden seizures, in which symptoms appear sharply and with intensity, it could be panic disorder.

In severe cases it may be possible for the practitioner to address the problem with Benzodiazepine drug therapy. But there are also other psychological therapies that can help manage stressful and anxiety-provoking situations ; an example is psycho-education to recognize symptoms, for example anticipatory anxiety. Training in relaxation techniques or cognitive-behavioral techniques also helps to assess the risk of a real threat.

Generalized anxiety disorder

Generalized anxiety disorder is characterized by a state of chronic anxiety and worry, lasting more than six months. Furthermore, people cannot control it and perceive it as excessive, and it presents and manifests itself with several symptoms:

  • Fatigue.
  • Irritability.
  • Muscle tension.
  • Insomnia.
  • Difficulty concentrating.
  • Restlessness.

There is a reduced ability to deal with stressful situations  and a hyper-alert attitude that leads to magnifying the importance of minor things, so even normal events can cause great concern. Vulnerability to this disorder has been related to the existence of emotional relationships marked by insecurity in childhood.

People who suffer from it  use worry as a defense strategy to avoid intense negative effects. By worrying about unrealistic threats, therefore, they avoid having to face real problems that they do not want to address. The acquisition of strategies to identify real concerns and face everyday problems can be achieved through cognitive-behavioral techniques.

Don’t let anxiety stop you from shining

Anxiety can overshadow our potential, put a brake on our personal and professional development. Sometimes we have to choose, face new situations that pose a challenge, but that allow us to achieve important results or take a path that may seem simpler, stay in the comfort zone and, thus, avoid the uncertainties that disturb us.

Don’t let anxiety stop you from getting everything you want. Fear of failure is one of the factors that can hold you back and lead you to live “comfortably”, without risk. However, does this attitude bear fruit? Probably not. It is crucial to work on tolerance to frustration, on how to cope with stressful situations and on the appearance of anticipatory anxiety.

The path to success is never all plain sailing, but from it  we can learn from obstacles and overcome them. One way to address the challenges you face in your life while decreasing anxiety is to set yourself attainable goals. Embrace your limits and upgrade your skills, this can take you as far as you want.
