In this fast-paced world, we tend not to stop to enjoy the little things in life. Looking into the eyes is one of the most beautiful experiences of our existence and we often don’t take the time to do it.
In this article, we are going to tell you about two experiments that will blow your mind. The goal of both is similar: to look directly into each other’s eyes for a set amount of time. The reactions and feelings as we focus our attention on just one look are incredible.
Look a stranger in the eye
Imagine going to work on the subway. You are bored and you look around, perhaps looking for a familiar face or thinking about the lives of passengers. Suddenly, your gaze meets that of another commuter. What is the first reaction? Obviously that of looking away or lowering your head with embarrassment. What would happen if you both held the gaze for a few seconds? Certainly the thing would intrigue you.
This situation was the initial step of an experiment called “Looks”, which was attended by 20 people, unknown to each other, then divided into pairs and with a simple delivery: look into each other’s eyes for a few minutes, letting go, while they were being filmed. .
A glance was enough to awaken sensations of all kinds in the participants: accomplices laughter, redness, nervous smiles, tachycardia or sweat in the hands. Keeping his gaze fixed on the other caused a series of emotions that no one was able to explain in words.
Happiness, joy and even love shone through those looks. Some of them even went so far as to kiss passionately! At the end of the rehearsal, each of them had to say what they had felt in those bizarre minutes.
Most defined the experience as a sensation they never expected; some spoke of love at first sight, others of the level of complicity that had been created with the stranger. The conclusion is that it is often enough to pay attention to the other to find what we are looking for. We simply have to take a closer look at what surrounds us. Here is a video about it:
Look your partner in the eye
In movies, we see scenes where the protagonists look at each other for long minutes and everything looks so magical… Why doesn’t this happen in real life? Because it is we who do not allow it.
No matter how long you have been with that special person, think about when was the last time you looked deeply into each other’s eyes without paying attention to anything else. We are confident that it will take you some time to find the answer.
An experiment similar to the first was carried out, with the intention of proving that looking into each other’s eyes increases the level of intimacy of the couple. During the course, two people had to hold each other’s gaze for 4 minutes, without speaking. The couples were very heterogeneous: strangers, boyfriends, guys on a first date, a couple who had been married for 55 years, etc.
It was interesting to analyze the statements and reactions of each of the participants at the stroke of the fourth minute. They all said that they felt closer to their partner, that love was reborn, and that they didn’t know why they didn’t look each other in the eye more often.
